In 2012, a woman came into the Skyline office with her son. She was roughly in her late 70s or early 80s and her son looked as if he was in his 50s. In tow was a scrap book with pictures from many years ago. One of the first things she said was, ” I started this club”. She immediately had our attention. She opened up the scrap book to show us some newspaper clippings of her son on one of the first Skyline teams. As inquisitive as we were, we asked her to tell us as much as she could.
So, a long time ago, longer than some of us have been alive, including myself, this woman had a desire to get her son and his friends playing soccer. In 1965, she started one of the first youth soccer organizations in Colorado. She called the organization Skyline Soccer. The organization was called Skyline after the phone prefix for the area of town the organization was run. For example, to call someone, you dialed SKY – 1234. That first year, this woman recruited a “German fellow”, as she abruptly put it to coach the boys team. He had a very thick German accent, but the boys really enjoyed him. The first year in existence, the boys’ team won the Denver Youth Soccer Championship. In 1976, Skyline became a non-profit organization. This was the beginning to a long history for Skyline Soccer Association.
One of the most important things we learned from this woman was that our organization was started in 1965, not 1967 as our current logo listed. She also told us that she was the one that started naming the teams after Native American tribes. The original Skyline logo was modeled after Native American artwork. With much buzz in the media about using Native American tribes in sports, we decided to do away with that practice in 2010 with the last Native American Tribe team, the Cherokee. In the newspaper clippings, she showed us a picture of the “German fellow”, as well as her son, who was only around 10-years-old at the time. She had comments about almost every boy in the picture. She still remembered almost everyone’s name as well as what position they were. The newspaper picture gets about as “classic” as a picture can get and I wouldn’t stop short of calling the players “rapscallions”, as they so looked.
Skyline has so much history in Denver. It was started as a community-based organization, and we strive to continue that tradition today. We pride our organization on knowing that we are the Heart of Denver Youth Soccer Since 1965. We work on creating an atmosphere of teaching, inspiring, and excelling, giving every child we can the opportunity to learn as much as they want, taking that knowledge and developing their own personality in soccer and then seeing the limits of their passion.
Skyline has been around a long time and the organization plans to stay around for a lot longer. The growth the organization has seen in the last few years is phenomenal. Many of the parents coming back to coach for us once played in the club. The organization has grown from 1,000 per season in 2009 to 2,500 per season in 2014. We have a long road ahead of us, but with the passion of the players, coaches, and parents today, we have a lot of support to do great things for the kids and the community.
